16-year-old suspect Cosgaya-Alvarez tracked down in Seattle

Federal Way Police announced last week that they have in custody a suspect involved in the shooting of Omero Garcia Mendez, 26, in the parking lot of Lakota Middle School.

PIO Cathy Schrock from the Federal Way Police Department said information from the public led police to suspect Luis Cosgaya-Alvarez at a home near 12th Avenue Southwest and Southwest Myrtle Street in Seattle. Cosgaya-Alvarez is 16 years old.

Cosgaya-Alvarez of Kent, Washington, also goes by the names of Youngster or Jr.

On August 14, at approximately 8:21 p.m., officers were dispatched to a shooting at Lakota Middle School, located at 1415 SW 314th Street in Federal Way.

When officers arrived a Hispanic male victim was located and determined to have suffered fatal gunshot wounds.

The preliminary information indicates that a black SUV type vehicle occupied by several Hispanic males entered the parking lot and fired shots, striking the victim.

The association between the suspect and victim is still not known, we believe this was not a random incident and there was no intention to harm others located at the scene.

At the time of the incident middle school football practice had just concluded and there were approximately 15-20 witnesses to this crime.

Detectives are currently interviewing witnesses at the scene and at Federal Way Police Department.
